Three days ago I woke up to find August had arrived… then I blinked and by golly it was three days later. I had the best of intentions this summer of blogging daily… running daily… spending time with my camera daily, and capturing all of those daily moments that slip by like sand through fingers. Ironically, the “daily” got in the way. The daily routine of summer, or lack there of… of working, designing, cooking, cleaning, caring, driving, swimming, and celebrating, made me choose between living the daily or documenting it.
Tonight was the 5th and 6th grade swim party at our neighborhood pool – a nice nudge that school will be starting soon. My oldest, who will be entering fifth grade in three weeks (gulp), invited a friend to come with him tonight. When we picked him up we were greeted with six, six week old puppies to which June Bug could not resist every attempt at taking one home with us. At one point she said, ‘but they’re SO CUTE!’, to which the typical response was given, ‘well they don’t stay cute forever.’ I laughed but in the back of my mind and the pit of my stomach I felt the guilt of not capturing more of this summer with my camera and my heart.
As we pulled out, the boys begged for a spree at Rocket Fizz before hitting the pool. Instead of saying no and getting them there on time, I listened to my heart screaming ‘YOU’RE ONLY YOUNG ONCE! Let them have Fizz!,’ and peeled into the parking lot. We each got a “soba pop”, as Bee Bop would say. It wasn’t until I got home that I noticed what mine had more than just fizz and sugar. It came with a message too. ”Take a picture – it’ll last longer.”
So true. So, so true.
I’m making it a mission to put the “daily” back in the daily chirp. I hope you will join me.
